PFA Tournament

Pride Football Australia (PFA) brings together football players and supporters from clubs across the country, for the annual PFA Tournament. It’s one of the standout events on our calendar – where football, community and Pride come together in one weekend.

About

Since 2009, an interstate gay and lesbian tournament has been proudly co-hosted annually by Sydney Rangers FC, Melbourne Rovers Soccer Club, The Flying Bats Women’s Football Club, and Brisbane Inferno. What started as a tournament between a handful of clubs has grown over the years into both a competitive and social event for all participating teams and their supporters.

Clubs compete for three trophies steeped in the history of the movement:

> The Josh Cavallo Shield, named for the A-League player who became one of the few openly gay active top-flight footballers in the world.
> The Justin Fashanu Cup, commencing in 2009, remembers and celebrates the life of the first gay man to publicly come out in professional football, in 1990.
>The Julie Murray Cup, contested by the women’s teams.

Our Team

Each year, we try to pull together an 11-a-side Brisbane Inferno squad to take part in the PFA Tournament. It’s not always guaranteed – some years we’ve managed to field a full team, and other years we haven’t had the numbers to establish our own team, and players were spread across other teams instead.

Pricing

Brisbane Inferno members are encouraged to take part in the PFA Tournament. There are no entry costs to participate, and Brisbane Inferno supplies the jersey kit – though the club doesn’t cover travel, accommodation, or event costs.

Nervous about joining? We have all been there, but there is no need. Feel free to reach out to one of our Brisbane Inferno committee members beforehand via our WhatsApp Community*, Instagram, Facebook or send an email to info@brisbaneinfernofc.com.au, and we’ll answer all your questions or concerns. We can even team you up with a committee member to make sure you already have a familiar face when you show up to one of our events!

*Within our WhatsApp Community, we’ve created a dedicated group for first-timers called “BIFC – First Timers”. This group only contains committee members – it’s a safe space to ask any questions or concerns before you attend an event. Once you’re settled in, we’ll help you move into one of the other dedicated group chats.
