Brisbane City Council Libraries is holding a Human Library event on Saturday 28 May 2022 at Brisbane Square Library (in the Brisbane CBD) from 11am to 3pm. The Library Programs Team is looking for people who represent groups that have faced stigma or prejudice in the community to volunteer as a ‘Human Book’ and share their personal experiences. This event helps challenge stigma and stereotypes through open dialogue and will be attended by Brisbane Library customers.
Volunteers will have a wide range of representation across the ’10 Pillars of Prejudice’ set by Human Library Organisation (HLO) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The pillars include religion, ethnicity, gender/sexuality, health, social status, disabilities, occupation, lifestyle and family relations/victim.
What is the Human Library?
The Human Library is an immersive reading experience where you borrow a person instead of a book. “Human Books” are individual volunteers who have been stereotyped, marginalised or faced stigma or prejudice, and share their story in 20-30 minute conversation with a small group of readers. Through safe and open dialogue, the Human Library encourages readers to challenge their personal bias and learn about diversity in the Brisbane community.
What is a Human Book?
A Human Book is a person that volunteers to represent a stigmatized group in the community based on their personal experiences. Human Books share a short story with a small group of readers and answers questions from readers to help challenge what is being said/told/understood about a given topic. To help shed light on the facts as you know them. Books are not political or on a mission when sharing, but rather able to respond to readers and have an open conversation.
If you are interested in becoming a Human Book volunteer please fill out the online expression of interest form through this link. Alternatively please find attached a PDF version that can be printed and returned to any Brisbane Library.

For the past 4 months, we have been working on our new club emblem. We wanted an evolution of our vibrant and proud phoenix to pay homage to the club’s creation whilst transforming our icon into a modern representation of our club today.
This turned into the basis of our emblem, and after many hours, meetings and submissions, we are pleased to present the club’s new emblem…
A huge thank you to Tom, Andris and everyone else involved.
These guys have worked extremely hard on this and have produced some AMAZING work! Thank you both so much! The committee and the club appreciate all your time and effort. You should both be very proud!
